Croatia 2010

Listen, fellows, let me tell you a story…

Once upon a time (more precisely: from the 16th to the 20th of August in the year 2010) two not-casual, super-handsome guys – let’s call them Matthias and Clemens – made an awesome approximately-1000-kilometers-tour.

Those two guys wanted to start very early in the morning, but had troubles with Matthias front axle bearing. Well, it took some time to fix it and afterwards they still had to pack up their bikes, so they couldn’t start before midday. However, the first stage of their tour wasn’t that exciting.

All they wanted was to get as fast as possible to the sea.
The Cruiser Freaks took the freeway all the way from Graz, Austria, to Koper, Slovenia, and then the short but nice street back North to Muggia, Italia – the first and only planed camping side.

The first night was uncomfortable as hell, ‘cause of our lack of airbeds and alcohol in the blood, and a soil out of fist-sized rocks…

The next stage of the tour followed the Western coastline of Istria. The plan was to enjoy the sight, drive slow and smooth, and find a nice camping side with beach and bars early the day.

In Fazana, Croatia, they let themselves down on a camping side called “Bi Village”, due of the facts, that this was an awesome name and that “Bi Village” provided all the requirements. So our heroes spent their day with beer, sun, watching girls and talking about man-topics, namely motorcycles and their customization, alcohol and (our) girls – randomly intermixed.

The journey continued – surprisingly without headache – upcountry through nice little villages, such as St. Reti, and creepy little villages, such as that ghost town near a huge coal fired power station.

The Eastern coast road was the next exciting part of the tour. You’ve got a really beautiful view from there and a cool curvy road.

The Cruiser Freaks planned to ride until Rijeka, Croatia, and stay there for the night. But this city turned out to be a shockingly dirty and awful harbor town, so they decided to ride on, until the environment gets more pleasant.

Well, they rode a while…

Finally, Selce (some kilometers past the island Krk) was chosen for the last overnighter. There was a fine little and cheap camping side with other groups of students, bikers and a German Triker. Again, they drank a lot, talked a lot, and enjoyed the last evening.

Sadly, the last day broke dawn – and with it the longest, most beautiful, most mentionable and most exhausting part of the tour.
Neither Matthias nor Clemens wanted to see Rijeka again, and they wanted to avoid the Croatian freeways, so they decided to turn upcountry as soon as possible and drive somewhere through the hinterland back to Slovenia. A word and a blow – but easier said than done.
The Cruiser Freaks got lost, took some wrong turns (yes, it happens even to such smart people like Matthias and Clemens). However, it turned out to be the greatest thing that could happen.
They saw wonderful passes through a mountain scenery like in the Rockies. It was also very thrilling, because they had no Croatian money left, the fuel was rare (no gas station anywhere) and they didn’t really know where they were or how far it was to the border of Slovenia.

Some hours later, they crossed the border in Brod na Kupi – in the middle of nowhere, the fuckin’ smallest border checkpoint ever seen.

Relieved by the circumstances of being able to pay with Euros again and getting fuel in our nearly empty tanks they moved along through the hinterland of Slovenia.

There were some nice regions too, but both of the travelers were tired and barely able to stay awake at the bike, hence they couldn’t attach value to it.

So the bikers were happy when they found to Ljubljana, and even happier to finally take the freeway back to Austria.

Four fuckin’ great days… Thanks, Redti!

As a closure I want to present Redti’s shortmovie about the tour. I strongly recommend you to watch it!
